Hall of Paleontology at the San Bernardino County Museum

The conceptual design for a new Hall of Paleontology will occupy approximately 11,500 sf. It will comprise of two floors: basement (5400 sf) and first floor (6100 sf). In the interests of economy and flexibility the construction elements in this preliminary conceptual study will be of a standardised nature. The first floor will form a continuation of the existing museum visitor circulation and contain a gallery, special exhibits gallery and the Southwest Center for Integrative Studies. It will be linked to the museum via a 30 foot long covered bridge allowing visitors to appreciate unprecedented framed views to the north (San Bernardino Mountains), to the south, as well as to the northern forecourt and the rock garden below. The bridge also connects visitors to an outdoor terrace adjoining the new cafe situated on the existing roofscape.

The basement will be situated partially above ground in order that the first floor link seamlessly with the existing museum floor level (at the west end of the building). It will contain a laboratory (with adjoining loading zone); compact storage, offices and a library collection. The conceptual design imagines an extension that completes and strengthens the existing museum circulation as well as the relationship between the museum and its immediate landscape. As such the design is presented as both a destination and a vibrant node along an exciting and variegated route. We imagine a collegiate atmosphere marked by optimism, clarity and sophisticated interrelationships. We look forward to further developing this concept, both programmatically and formally, and bringing to the existing museum a rejuvenating catalyst. We are excited at the opportunity to contribute to this cultural center.
