FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Redlands, California
|
This 15,000 SF two story brick masonry structure encloses a large-volume
multi-purpose sanctuary with excellent acoustics for the von Beckerath
pipe organ. The sanctuary has an outstanding degree of adaptability
to many varied activities. This was accomplished through the careful
design of movable elements and a unique system for providing the lighting,
power and communication connections. A wood and glass chapel, situated
in its own garden and accented by a carefully preserved redwood tree,
provides a counter point to the masonry sanctuary element. A lower
level education center is integrated with these features and it too
provides a high level of adaptability. Meticulous site planning provided
an interior garden terrace, which is sheltered from the surrounding
busy urban scene. It received the Masonry Institute Design Award,
A Vintage Award in 1995 and is included in The New Guide to the Architecture
of Southern California and Terry Siloƒs book entitled Profiles.
